The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is an advanced fifth-generation multi-role fighter produced in three variants: the standard F-35A, the STOVL-variant of F-35B used by the UK and US, and the aircraft carrier F-35C.
The UK committed to buying 138 F-35B aircraft to operate from land and Queen Elizabeth-class carriers.
It is the third RAF aircraft named Lightning, following the WWII P-38 and Cold War English Electric fighter.
First flown in December 2006, the F-35 replaces older jets like the Harrier GR9 and Tornado GR4.
Ten countries have purchased the aircraft, with the UK currently operating 15 F-35Bs shared by the RAF and Royal Navy.
